Independent delta routes, leg by leg

Three ways to string the legs together without a tour: a short loop through Can Tho and Chau Doc, a five-day crossing to Phu Quoc, and a slower eight-day line through the coconut provinces. Each table shows the transport for each day and where to sleep.

How these routes are built

Each route uses only legs that run every day by public transport, keeps the longest bus ride to one per day, and puts an overnight stop before any early boat. Journey times come from the route planner, with the same labels: listed, reported or our estimate. None of these routes is sold by this site; they are patterns to adapt.

Two rules make delta routes work. First, sleep where the next morning's transport starts — Chau Doc before the Phnom Penh boat, Ha Tien or Rach Gia before an island crossing. Second, keep the bus legs in the middle of the day and the boats and markets in the early morning.

Three days: Can Tho and Chau Doc

DayLegTransport and timeSleep
1Ho Chi Minh City → Can ThoCoach or van, 2 h 55 – 4 h 45 listedCan Tho (Ninh Kieu)
2Cai Rang at dawn, then Can Tho → Chau DocBoat from Ninh Kieu; coach about 4 hChau Doc
3Chau Doc → Ho Chi Minh City, or → Phnom PenhCoach 5–7.5 h; or speedboat 07:00, about 6.5 h—

This is the shortest route that includes both the main floating market and the border town. The weak point is day 3: the coach back to Ho Chi Minh City is long. Continuing to Phnom Penh by river turns that day into the highlight instead.

Five days: across the delta to Phu Quoc

DayLegTransport and timeSleep
1Ho Chi Minh City → Vinh LongCoach, 2.5–3 h est.Vinh Long or An Binh islet
2Vinh Long → Can ThoVan or coach, 45–50 min est.Can Tho
3Cai Rang at dawn; Can Tho → Chau DocCoach about 4 hChau Doc
4Chau Doc → Ha TienCoach or car, 1.5–2 h est.Ha Tien
5Ha Tien → Phu QuocFast boat, 1 h 10 – 1 h 30Phu Quoc

This line crosses the whole delta and ends on the island, where you can fly out from Phu Quoc. Remember that you need a Vietnamese visa or e-visa for the mainland part; Phu Quoc's own exemption only covers the island. In the south-west monsoon, keep day 5 flexible.

Eight days: the slow line

DayLegTransport and timeSleep

2Ben Tre → Vinh LongVan or coach, 1–1.25 h est.Vinh Long or An Binh islet
3Vinh Long → Sa Dec → Can ThoShort hops: about 30 min, then just over 1 hCan Tho
4Can Tho, Cai Rang and the isletsBoats from Ninh KieuCan Tho
5Can Tho → Chau DocCoach about 4 hChau Doc
6Sam Mountain and Tra SuLocal transport; Tra Su 30–40 min each wayChau Doc
7Chau Doc → Ha TienCoach or car, 1.5–2 h est.Ha Tien
8Ha Tien → Phu QuocFast boat, 1 h 10 – 1 h 30Phu Quoc

The first three days are short hops between neighbouring towns, made easier since the Rach Mieu 2 bridge replaced the ferry at Ben Tre in August 2025. A variation for the south: from Can Tho on day 5, take the expressway to Ca Mau — about 1.5 hours by car — and return to Can Tho, then continue west a day later.

Where to break a long journey

  • Ho Chi Minh City to Chau Doc: break in Can Tho or Long Xuyen rather than doing 5–7.5 hours in one go.
  • Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien: about 327 km; break in Chau Doc or Rach Gia.
  • Ho Chi Minh City to Ca Mau: the expressway makes it about 4.5 hours by car, so a break is now optional; Can Tho is the natural stop if you want one.

When these routes break

Four things regularly upset delta routes, and each has a simple fix:

  • The Lunar New Year. Demand for every seat peaks. Book each leg ahead or travel at another time.
  • The flood season. From about September to November water is high; in October and November the biggest tides flood riverside streets in Can Tho and Vinh Long early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Keep markets and boats flexible.
  • The south-west monsoon at sea. Island boats are suspended in rough weather. End the route on the mainland, or allow a spare day before any flight from Phu Quoc.
  • Festival crowds. The Ba Chua Xu festival at Sam Mountain, late in the fourth lunar month, fills Chau Doc.

Common questions

Questions readers send

How many days do I need for the Mekong Delta?

Three days covers Can Tho and Chau Doc. Five lets you cross to Phu Quoc. Eight allows short hops through the smaller towns without long bus days.

Can I end a delta trip on Phu Quoc?

Yes. Boats from Ha Tien or Rach Gia reach the island the same day, and Phu Quoc has an international airport for the flight out.

Is it better to go clockwise or anticlockwise?

Starting from Ho Chi Minh City and ending on Phu Quoc avoids doubling back. If you start on Phu Quoc, check the visa rules first: the island's exemption does not cover the mainland.

Do I need to book these legs in advance?

Outside holidays most bus legs can be bought a day ahead. Book the Phnom Penh speedboat a day or two ahead, and everything around the Lunar New Year.
